While every house in Slovenia has a civic address, many houses also carry a household name. These names are how other people typically referred to that family. This house carries the name of Gornji Kajinovi. The origin of the name is related to the original owners of this house. Presently we have no evidence to support it but it is suspected that this family is an offshoot of the Poljankini of Podklanec 8.
Historically, the house was consistently named “Gornji” or “Gornji Kajin”. This name suggests that there may have been a related Kajin household nearby called the “Dolnji Kajini” yet our research has not found the existence of any such house, yet. It was not until the late 1800s when this household name was documented as being “Jelkini”. Soon after, the name reverted simply to “Kajinovi”.
This is one of the houses that is considered a “new house” as the numbering no longer carries a east to west orientation. This house is at the eastern end of Podklanec back in the Dolnji Podklanec part of the village.
Through the period of our studies, we have found 5 distinct houses which carried the Kajin surname–not to be confused with the Karin surname. This is the fourth of the five houses (in order of house address). The Kajin surname is only originally found in the village of Podklanec.
The oldest record we have found to date for a person from this house is for Nikolaj Kajin b. 1802. He married Barbara Grubič b. 1802. Together, they had at least 8 children, including:
1A. Jože Kajin b. 1822, m. ca. 1841 to his first wife — they lived at Podklanec 8.
1B. Nikolaj Kajin b. 1826. At this time, it is unknown what happened to him afterwards.
1C. Johan Kajin b. 1832, m. 1864 to Katarina Benec (Kucanova) — they remained at this house.
