Family histories of each household will make up the bulk of this website. We will give a short overview of each household history, discussion the origin of the household name, any changes in surname at the household and how and if the household was abandoned. We will then give genealogical information for each generation, separated by a horizontal line. All addresses will use the house numbering system that was in place up until ca. 1952. Histories are organized by geographical location in Zilje.
In the oldest records we have seen some individuals were recorded by first name only, especially brides; the idea of a surname was a new one as late as the 17th century. Baptismal records from this period also name individuals with surnames such as Perušič and Vučič, although these are not mentioned in the tax registers of the same period. These, however, may not be surnames, but rather the household name (i.e. Perušiči, Vuki). Names of mothers in these records do not record their maiden names, but rather the feminized surname of their husband (e.g. Anna Chadonichka, Mare Jaketichka). Spelling of surnames has also changed over time, changing based on language of documentation (Latin, German, Slovenian), and changing during the process of immigration (i.e. to North America). Please refer to the chart for the possible spellings of surnames we have encountered.
