The Maradini household at Zilje 15 has had the Balkovec surname for the entire period of records we have reviewed, i.e. at least since the 1750s. The 1870 status animarum records that the Maradini held 3\/4 H\u00fcbe; the only other family holding this much land in Zilje<\/a> were the Vuki<\/a>. The origin of the name is unknown, although Maradin<\/em> exists as a surname in other countries in the Balkans.<\/p>\n

The oldest record we have found to date for a person from this house is for Johan Balkovec. Together with his wife, they had at least 1 child:<\/p>\n

4G. Jo\u017ee Balkovec b. 1860, m. 1890 to Barbara Kasun (Spahi\u0107i 1).<\/p>\n

4H. Marko Balkovec b. 1862, died at the age of 48. At this time, it is unknown if he was ever married or had children.<\/p>\n

4I. Franc Balkovec b. 1863, died at the age of 46 in Pittsburgh. At this time, it is unknown if he was ever married or had children.<\/p>\n

4J. Magdalena Balkovec b. 1865, m. 1885 to Peter Stare\u0161ini\u010d (Pe\u010dov<\/a>) — they lived at Zilje 49<\/a>.<\/p>\n
