The area is part of the traditional region of <a title=\"Lower Carniola\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lower_Carniola\">Lower Carniola<\/a> and is now included in the <a title=\"Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southeast_Slovenia_Statistical_Region\">Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dragatu\u0161 was attested in historical sources in 1352 as <i>Dragotusch<\/i> (and as <i>Dragatusch<\/i> in 1402, <i>Draganntutsch<\/i> in 1490, and <i>Dragotws<\/i> in 1593). The name is derived from the Slavic personal name <i>*Dragotu\u0161\u044a<\/i> or <i>*Dragotux\u044a<\/i>, presumably referring to an early resident of the place. In the past the village was known as <i>Dragatusch<\/i> in German.<\/p>\n<p>The local parish church is dedicated to <a title=\"John the Baptist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_the_Baptist\">John the Baptist<\/a> (<a title=\"Slovene language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slovene_language\">Slovene<\/a>: <span lang=\"sl\"><i>sveti Janez Krstnik<\/i><\/span>) and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto.
